Permaculture Design Course (PDC)

July 8th until 21st at Jiwa Community Garden. 

This Permaculture Design Course (PDC) is hosted in English, with Head Instructor and Teacher John Champagne from Brogo Permaculture Gardens in Australia, supported by Krisna Waworuntu from Bumi Langit in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. 


Course fee includes 13 days of teaching, PDC certificate, all field trips, breakfast, lunch & dinner.

All Permaculture Design Courses are based on Bill Mollison’s book ‘Permaculture: A Designers Manual'. 

The courses at Jiwa Garden are based this curriculum and incorporate our own experiences from John Champagne, Krisna Waworuntu as well as the Jiwa Garden Team. This includes decades of extensive design and implementation of permaculture in Australia, Indonesia and other parts of South East Asia. 

Course Contents

Course will be held from 8th - 21st July 2024, with a day break on Sunday 14th July. ​

We will start everyday at 8am and finish at 5pm with dinner available after that. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the course fee, so there is nothing to worry about.

John Champagne

John Champagne

Meet John Champagne, a seasoned permaculture enthusiast with over three decades of hands-on experience. Embarking on his permaculture journey in 1992 with a Permaculture Design Course in Chiltern, Victoria, taught by Vries and Hugh Gravestein , who were students of the legendary Bill Mollison, John's passion for sustainable living soon evolved into both a life path and a thriving career. His teaching journey began in 2004 alongside David Holmgren, shaping the minds of eager learners.


Having conducted more than 50 Permaculture Design Courses across diverse landscapes in Australia, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Thailand, and India, John's commitment to spreading permaculture wisdom is endless.


Together with his wife Sharon, John founded Brogo Permaculture Gardens in the picturesque Bega Valley, (New South Wales, Australia), 30 years ago. This 11-acre haven, situated in a temperate climate, serves as both a family home and a thriving permaculture demonstration site. It's a hub of abundance where excess produce, certified organic, finds its way to local outlets.


As a permaculture design consultant, John's expertise extends to private properties, eco-villages, and community and school gardens. His influence reaches beyond borders, where he has been instrumental in shaping permaculture education. Today, his students, inspired by his teachings, conduct courses in Thailand, Indonesia, and India, ensuring the permaculture flame continues to burn brightly.


A dedicated advocate for sustainable living, John plays a vital role in his local community. For over 15 years, he served as the President of SCPA (South Coast Producers Association), a non-profit community group focused on nurturing a local food economy. Together with his PDC tutor Hugh Gravestein, John pioneered the South Coast Field Days in 1995, Australia's first event spotlighting 'Sustainable Living & Landuse.'


Acknowledged as an elder in the Australian Permaculture Movement, John Champagne remains a dynamic force. A former board member of Permaculture Australia for three years, he currently spearheads Permafund, a charitable group channeling funds to permaculture projects worldwide. In 2018, John's passion for community and sustainable living culminated in organizing the Australasian Permaculture Convergence (APC14) held in Canberra. Krisna Waworuntu

Krisna Putra Waworuntu is a dedicated advocate for sustainable farming and permaculture. Growing up in a family immersed in a farming environment, Krisna developed a deep appreciation for the natural world and a passion for regenerative agriculture. Since 2012, he has been actively involved in his father's permaculture farming system on Bumi Langit, Yogyakarta.

Driven to deepen his knowledge and understanding of permaculture, Krisna embarked on a transformative journey. In 2012, he attended a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) led by Robyn Francis, immersing himself in the principles and techniques of sustainable farming. Seeking to expand his horizons further, he ventured to the Dead Sea valley in the Jordanian desert in 2015 to participate in an internship program for the greening the desert project by Geoff Lawton.

Krisna's diverse experiences have shaped his expertise in permaculture and enabled him to make tangible contributions to the field. He initiated Permablitz activities in Yogyakarta and Bali, fostering community engagement and collaboration in implementing sustainable farming practices. At Bumi Langit Farm, he played a vital role in making improvements and advancing the permaculture system.

Recognized as an accomplished educator, Krisna has had the privilege of teaching the International Permaculture Design Course alongside Australian instructor and permaculture practitioner, John Champagne. He has shared his knowledge and expertise with locals across Indonesia, guiding them in the integration of sustainable farming practices such as permaculture, syntropic farming, and biodynamics. Krisna's approach is rooted in honoring the diverse tropical culture and local wisdom, emphasizing the importance of harmonizing traditional practices with innovative techniques.
